Rod Stewart sang an old “Gospel” song, “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?” The lyrics go like this, “Have I told you lately that I love you? Have I told you, there’s no one else above you? You fill my heart with gladness. You take away all my sadness. You ease my troubles, that’s what you do.”
This song connected with the public because of the heartfelt expression of love and devotion it portrayed. I once saw a video of the artist singing the lyrics with such passion and such love that when he was finished, he had to wipe the tears from his eyes.
Yes, I know Rod Stewart sings Pop Music and the aforementioned ballad is not actually a Gospel song but hear me out. When one hears the lyrics, those same words could be written about our God. Christians should have such passion and love for the Lord that it shows up in all areas of our lives!
The Psalmist wrote his expression of love and gratitude to God in Psalm 116. “I love the Lord because He took time for me. He did not blow me off. He did not treat me like a second-class citizen. He saved me from the living hell my life had become. Because He is so compassionate and loving and good to me, I will serve Him for the rest of my life!” (paraphrased).
Do we demonstrate our love for God every day? It’s one thing to express love to someone you can see, feel, touch. But how can we show the invisible, yet Almighty God that we really love Him?
The writer of Psalm 116 was concerned about the same issue. Psalm 116:12 “What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me?” How can I repay the Lord for all His goodness to me? How can I show Him how much He means to me?
Talk to Him. (Psalm 116:2)
Live for Him. (Psalm 116:14, 18)
Serve Him. (Psalm 116:16)
Is your love for the Lord evident in the way you live your life? Is it reflected in where you spend or give your financial resources? Many say they love Jesus, but the evidence of their life and checkbook shows that they love other things more. May it be exhibited in our lives that Christ is above all!
