A NOT SO HAPPY ‘EARTH DAY’?

Yes, Wednesday of this week is ‘Earth Day’. This is one contribution made by my generation during our idealistic stage. The year was 1970 when an activist from San Francisco named John McConnell and a Senator from Wisconsin named Gaylord Nelson decided that we could save the Earth from pollution.

I am no longer quite so confident that my generation is going to get this job completed. But then I no longer wear flowers in my hair, or hair for that matter.

I did click onto earthday.org and use their ‘footprint calculator’ before writing this. You can do this free and you can even skip the parts which ask for a donation or your e-mail address. This calculator tells you just how many copies of our planet it would take if everyone tried to live the way you live.

Why is a pastor writing about ‘Earth Day’? Well, God did create the earth. Then He told Adam to take care of it for Him. Adam and his ‘close kin’ did not do such a good job, so God sent a flood to wash it clean. God then gave Noah & his sons a second chance at taking care of His earth.

A short review of all this can be seen by reading; Gen. 1:1, 11, 24, & 29; Gen. 2:15; Gen. 8:22; and Gen. 9:2. I will only highlight three of those verses here. Gen. 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Gen. 9:1-2 “And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered.”

The bottom line is found in that last line. “Into your hand they are delivered”. It is still His earth, but He did tell us to take care of it.

Blessings,
Bro. Dennis
