I love get-togethers for a variety of reasons. I love the fellowship, and I love food. One perk of being a Baptist is the amount of food that is brought every time we meet. I enjoy eating. There is a problem I find though, I am never completely full. There have been times where I have eaten so much that my stomach hurts and I vow to never eat again. Not too long after I make that vow, I am hungry again and I begin to snack. I have this hunger that is never completely satisfied.
Many things can give us that feeling of being unsatisfied. Many want to have their dream job, and when they get it, it is not what they thought it would be. There is disappointment. Many people desire to have a certain number of children, and they enjoy their children, but it does not bring a fullness of joy and satisfaction. Many people live paycheck to paycheck, trying to make ends meet, wishing that they could make more money. They may one day get more money, but they still do not feel completely satisfied.
Our lives can be a lot like our stomachs. We want what looks good, we want what looks enjoyable. We may obtain those things, yet we still feel empty. Many then turn to sin, thinking that it will fill them up, but it only makes them feel emptier. We were made by God for God. We were never to look anywhere other than Him for satisfaction and fulfillment. We were made to experience Him and to walk with Him. However, we have a problem, a sin problem. Apart from Christ, We are slaves to sin. We will never feel satisfied because of our sinfulness. What is amazing is that God, in His loving kindness, sent Jesus to be the propitiation of our sins. He paid the ultimate penalty, to redeem us from the bondage of slavery, to set us free to Worship Him. Jesus said in John 6:35…
“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger.”
For those in sin, you will never feel satisfied, you will never feel free, unless you repent of your sins and trust in Jesus Christ. If you are saved, remind yourself daily of the Gospel. Remember whose you are. Do not look to this world to bring you what you are looking for, but look to Christ. I am so grateful that the deepest longings of my soul are satisfied in God and what He has done for me. We serve an awesome God.
