It’s one of those dreaded days that fathers of daughters must face. Both girls are going to the Winter Formal at school. Oh my goodness! What am I to do? You know, making that “man cave” out in the garage is looking better and better!
For years I’ve been preparing them for this day. “The dress shopping must include at least one trip to Goodwill!!!” My philosophy for years is now a slogan painted across the wall of one of my favorite haunts – “Why pay retail?!” A sentiment that is near and dear to my heart. I am proud to proclaim that my dream – and hard work – has come true. Dory will be wearing a beautiful “hand me over” dress from a cousin. After my personal reconnaissance mission, Bretney went to another one of my favorite places and found a great dress that she really likes. Not only was it a fraction of the original retail, it was on sale!! “Heaven, I’m in heaven…” Of course, the real shocker was having to buy new shoes to go with the dresses! (Hey, I don’t buy new shoes every time I get a new pair of pants!) Anyway, they will be my beautiful princesses as always.
Many of us have grown up in Christian homes. I was taken to church from day one. I grew up there, starting in the nursery. You would think that I had it made; my ticket to heaven had already been punched but it doesn’t work that way. The day comes when each one of us have to make the Christian faith our own. We can’t ride Momma’s coattails into heaven. Being an American won’t get us into heaven. Living a good life or doing good deeds won’t get us into heaven. One Christian writer said, “Going to church won’t make you a Christian any more than going to McDonald’s will make you a hamburger.” With the start of a new year, make sure your faith is in a personal relationship with Jesus, the rock that will not, can not, be moved!
love ya, Bret.
