Last week was Homecoming at my school and I discovered that a lot of 6th graders have no idea what that is. Of course, homecoming at a middle school is a little silly anyway. I mean, how many times have you gone back to your middle school? My middle school is in another town so that’s problematic for me but I doubt I would go anyway. One girl in my class was elected to the homecoming royalty court and she was asking all kinds of questions and I explained it as best as I could. Or so I thought. As they passed the football schedule on the wall, they saw the game listed as homecoming and said, “Oh, homecoming is a football game!” I finally gave in and gave them the complete, unabridged explanation.
In recent years, the death of a Christian has been called a “home-going.” I guess we can’t really call it a homecoming since we haven’t been to heaven yet. There are several gospel songs that echo what the Scriptures say about this world not being our home. We’re travelers passing through; sojourners who have stopped here for a time. That being said, we sure do expend a lot of time, energy, effort, and worry taking care of the things of this world. And I admit that I’ve got a stack(s) full of stuff to prove it! There’s nothing wrong with a nice car or house or clothes except when they (and their upkeep) get in the way of our relationship with God. I don’t think God expects us to dress like we’re homeless but what could or might God do with the money we spend on another new outfit? And it would last longer than a homecoming corsage!
The choir has started on Christmas music. If you like to sing – especially Christmas music – why not join us for a short term commitment!
love ya, Bret.
