We were headed to my Mom and Dad’s house from Bells so I decided to go the “back way” through Gadsden. I like to break up the monotony of 412 sometimes by going the scenic route. It was a hot day and ahead of us I saw something wiggling on the road. At first I thought it was those heat waves you see coming off the pavement but as we got closer I realized it was a rather long black snake. That’s one thing – among many others – that I have in common with Indiana Jones, I don’t like snakes. He was in a big hurry. I can only imagine it was to get off of the hot pavement. He was working so furiously that I fought the urge to run over it, though I will admit I was tempted! On my morning walks, I’ve noticed a similar situation with some earth worms. The problem is they don’t move quite as quickly as that snake did. As a result, there are several shriveled up worms that got fried on the sidewalk!
What about our spiritual lives? Have you ever found yourself in a “hot mess” because you weren’t paying attention to where you were going? You willingly – or purposefully – went down the wrong road, away from God and you find yourself facing a choice between right and wrong. I pray that when faced with sin, you and I will have a similar response to that snake. May we remain so sensitive to the Lord that the heat of disobedience would send us running in the opposite direction. Even the temptation, the contemplation of sin, would be so uncomfortable that we would hurry back to the safety and joy of His loving care. The last thing we want to do is to be like those worms and get “fried” by the devil!
love ya, Bret.
