I’ve caught myself using an old expression, “That’s the last thing I need.” Do you ever say that? It usually happens when I go shopping. I’m thumbing through the racks and I’ll see something I like. For example, another blue shirt. Now, I already have several blue shirts so if common sense kicks in, my brain will say, “Another blue shirt is the last thing I need.” Then, if I listen to my common sense, I’ll put it back on the rack. It can take some of the fun out of shopping, but it can make other things better like our closet rod or bank account! Being a theatre person, unusual or exotic clothes catch my eye – it could be used as a costume someday, right?! However, once my brain says, “That’s the last thing you need,” it’s hard to justify buying a kilt or an 18th century waistcoat. I will admit that sometimes common sense does not win out though which explains my very full closet! And all the roadside treasure projects that fill the garage! And… well, let’s just leave it at that.
When I said, “That’s the last thing I need” the other day, it got me thinking. What is the last thing I need? It’s certainly not a new blue shirt, or car, or DIY project. No, when my life is over and I face Almighty God, none of those things will matter. I will stand before God and He will ask, “Why should I let you into heaven?” (To put it in human terms.) The last thing I need – literally – is to be a child of God who professed Jesus as Lord and Savior because that determines where I’m going to spend eternity. So, the last thing I need is really the first thing I need – to be a Christian. We give our hearts to the Lord and then spend the rest of our lives telling others about it so they, too, can face God unafraid. Jesus is the first and last and He should be our first and last as well.
If I don’t see you near the blue shirts, I’ll see you at our next togethering.
Until then,
love ya!
