Every so often, I have a week that sort of comes and goes. I’ll check my calendar for an event and think, “Oh, that’s two weeks away.” I’ll check later and realize, “Oh no! That’s next week!” Every time I check on it, it seems to change in my mind – next week, two weeks, next week, and so on. This week is like that. Thanksgiving is over, and we should start thinking about Christmas but no, we’ve got another full week of November! Remember, Thanksgiving floats – it’s the third Thursday of November. It was early this year so there’s still a lot of month left over!
This week is an “in between” time. I’m thinking about packing away the fall leaves and stuff but hesitant to break out the Christmas sweaters. Some people treat their lives this way. They sit around, biding their time until the next big thing happens.
This reminds me of “The Dash.” It started as a poem and then became a popular song. The story goes that a man at a funeral was contemplating the dates on the tombstone. All that separated the birth date and the death date was a dash. What did the deceased do with his “dash” or his life between birth and death? Let’s turn that question on ourselves. What are you and I doing with our dash or “in between” time? Are we sitting around waiting on something or are we making the most of what we have at this moment in time? A popular quote says, “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” Live it. Use it. Make the most of it.
Jesus put it this way. “I have come so that they might have life and have it in abundance.” (John 10:10) Sure there are times and needs for quiet and rest, but Jesus never intended us to spend our lives that way. I don’t know about you, but I want to live abundantly! So, until our next togethering, live abundantly in the fullness of the Lord! And go ahead and get the sweaters out!
