It seems a little silly, but we have to baby sit our washing machine. You see, we live in a very old house. Try as we may, some of the household systems just don’t work well. We’ve had our plumbing worked on several times. Here we are though, a few months after our last service call and we’re having trouble again – or still? Anyway, our washing machine tends to overflow the drain. While it’s draining, you can hear the water backing up. It sounds like a slide whistle getting higher and higher. We play a game of tag to hit the off button before it spills over the top of the pipe. The water drains out, even gurgling several feet down. We turn it on again and wait for the water to rise back up.
I know what you’re thinking. “Where is he going with this one?” Well two related thoughts come to mind. First, if we’re going to have clean clothes, we have to put up with this until we can schedule the next service call. Paul tells us to work out our salvation. We don’t do anything to be saved but we must tend to it afterwards. The way we live our lives will either help or hinder our progress. Would you buy a ticket but never take the journey? No, we’d go catch that flight or hop in the car. We’d read the signs along the way, check Google maps, keep gas in the car – anything and everything to insure reaching our destination.
Secondly, water coming out of the drain pipe tells me that the machine is doing what it’s supposed to be doing. If we’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing, our spiritual lives should be filled to overflowing. We keep it full through prayer, Bible study, worship and other things. It’s hard to share Jesus if we’re low ourselves. Keep your cup full so you can “splash out” on others along the way!
