Who doesn’t love a birthday?! I love mine. I don’t mind the celebration to go on for days even. If my birthday is in the middle of the week, I’ll let someone take me out the weekend before, celebrate with my family on the very day, and then let someone else honor me the weekend after. I always claim my birthday, even if I’m beginning to not claim all the years!
This is the time of year for America’s birthday. Sometimes we get so caught up in picnics, family get-togethers and finding the best fireworks display, we forget exactly what we’re celebrating. At some point in the day we really should stop and thank God for our country and ask for His blessings on our country and its leadership. Wouldn’t it be kind of weird for my family to go out to eat and spend the evening together but then never tell me Happy Birthday? I sure think so! Yet we do all this celebrating on July 4th and sometimes never mention the “guest of honor.”
I am privileged and honored to live in America and be an American citizen. I am thankful for my country. I am thankful for all the hard work and sacrifice it took to get us here today. I believe we are one of the greatest countries in the world – if not the greatest. Why else do people continue to come here to start a new life or find a better life?
For America to continue to be great, we – especially Christians – need to remain vigilante and do our part. We must speak the truth and stand for the truth. We must speak up when society wants to go down a dark road. The “Moral Majority” may have become a bit of a cliché but it was real and had real political power. It may still be out there somewhere but going uphill is always more tiring than going with the flow. Keep your eyes on Jesus and continue to fight the good fight – both spiritually and politically.
Thanks to the Choir, Dory, Benjamin, the decorating group and the fellowship group for making Sunday an extra special day!
Until our next togethering,
love ya,
Bret
