I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day.  We did the usual picnic kind of thing.  My younger brother grilled burgers and hot dogs.  We added slaw, potato salad, dips, and various other sides.  And of course, we had a variety of sweets including watermelon!  Family and friends gathered around the table and the laughter flowed.  Naturally, I ate too much which made my eyelids very heavy.  How does that happen?  Anyway, we had a great day.

I’m happy to say that we did include the families of fallen soldiers in our prayers so it really was a memorial day.  A memorial is an object or event used to remember someone who died.  Statues, plaques, and markers are forms of memorials as well as gifts and charitable donations.  We used part of our Sunday service as a memorial to fallen soldiers.

There is another memorial that we regularly observe in church – the Lord’s Supper. Jesus taught us the pattern and we continue to say, “We do this in memory of You.”  (King James poetry puts it this way, “This do in remembrance of Me.”)  Every time we take the Lord’s Supper, we are remembering the incredible sacrifice that Jesus gave.  Yes, many soldiers have given their lives for their country or other noble cause.  Jesus however did it for everyone, the whole world, even for the ones who are His outright enemies and antagonistic to Him.  Plus, He gave us a gift as well.  His death offers us eternal life.  So as you remember our fallen soldiers, remember our Savior as well Who gave His life to offer us the gift of everlasting life!

Memorial Day has also become the “official” start of summer so Happy Summer!  Church does go on though so no matter what activities you have planned make sure you don’t take a vacation from church!

Until our next togethering,

love ya,

Bret
