God is in control!  Do you believe that?  Our recent Sunday School lesson was about how God worked (and still works!!) through all sorts of people, including “dysfunctional” families like Isaac and Rebecca, who played favorites with their sons.  One son, Esau, gave up his family rights because he was overwhelmed with hunger.  The other was Jacob, the supplanter or usurper, who cheated his brother not once but twice and ended up with his portion of the family inheritance and blessing.  Yet through it all God was at work, developing the lineage that would one day give birth to Jesus, the Savior of the world!  J. D. Greear was quoted in our lesson as saying, “In the great mystery of grace, God commandeers even our stupid decisions to accomplish His purposes in us.”

Even our stupid decisions!  Is that encouraging to you?  It sure is to me!  As I was leading the music Sunday morning, I started us off singing “How Great Thou Art.”  I glanced down the bulletin and saw that the choir special was also “How Great Thou Art.”  For a moment I was bumfuzzled.  What had I done?  How could I have repeated a song like that?  And just one song apart!  What was I thinking?  But I thought, “Oh well, not much I can do about it now!”  Afterwards, I remembered our lesson.  God is God and He was and is at work, even through me!  Maybe we really needed to hear those words twice.  Or perhaps singing the words allowed us to better reflect on them later as the choir sang them.  All I know – and am completely sure of – is that God is God and He is in control no matter what stupid decisions I may make or whatever “crazy” the world may throw at me.  That fact should make us all sleep easier at night, right!?

Until our next togethering,
love ya, Bret.
