While Bretney was out of town, Dory and DaLee gave me a wonderful Father’s Day outing.  They went shopping with me, wherever I wanted to go, and promised not to fuss or complain.  So we went somewhere we’ve been meaning to go for a long time – the new IKEA store in Memphis.  And an outing it was!  This is a massive furniture and home furnishings store.  If you follow the main path, you meander through practically every square foot of the showroom and warehouse!  Between the three of us, hardly a square was left untouched!!

Some men might think that this was a wasted day but it was right up my alley.  I love my Dad and am very thankful for him but we’re built differently.  My grilling gene still lies dormant.  I love the outdoors but not for hunting and fishing.  I’ve learned a lot about cars from him – all those nights holding the flashlight while he changed out the brake pads – but I’d still rather a “trained professional” work on mine.  And I know a thing or two about building and construction but I can’t saw a straight line!

Oh well, I’m my Dad’s son but I’m not him.  And that’s ok.  God didn’t make me to be a duplicate of my Dad.  He made me unique and special just like He made each and every one of you.  The Bible reminds us that God made us in His image which means our journey, our goal is to become more and more like Him.  Daddy sees the beauty in a wood grain.  God sees the beauty in each person.  Daddy can build a house.  God can build a person.  Daddy can fix a lot of broken motors.  God can fix a broken person.  As much as I’d like to be like my Daddy, I want to be like God even more.  And that’s more exciting than the best sale in town!

Until our next togethering,

love ya,

Bret
