When my folks bought their house they decided to keep the pool for the grandkids. I have the dubious honor of being the pool boy. So, I went over today to start the annual “opening of the pool.” You see, the pool has been under a cover all winter to keep leaves and debris out of it and to try to keep the water somewhat fresh. To start the season, you take off the cover and get the water ready for swimming. Even with our efforts, our water still manages to turn some shade of green by the time we take the cover off.
Every year there’s a great debate about how bad the water is and can it be fixed. We take a sample of pool water to the pool store to get it analyzed and buy pounds of stuff to pour in to fix it. A few days later we take another sample and buy another round of chemicals to “fix it.” Two years ago we battled and battled and finally got it swimmable just in time to close it for the season. Last year, we bit the bullet and drained the pool so we could clean it and fill it with fresh water. What a great swim season we had!! This year the water needs some work but I’m telling myself it’s not too bad so we’ll see how it goes.
All too often we try the same thing with our lives. We know there is a problem. There’s all kinds of green junk floating around, clouding up our lives. We dump in pounds of good works and positive thoughts and well meaning promises to try to clean it up but the alga of sin continues to plague us. What is needed is for Jesus to thoroughly clean us and fill us anew with His living water. He’s not a quick fix but a total transformation. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Cor 5:17) So jump in the deep end of God’s love!
Until our next togethering,
love ya,
Bret
