My Dad loves to fish. He’s done his share of hunting too but fishing is quicker and easier. I never did get into that. As much as I love sunshine, swimming, and places like the beach, you’d think fishing would fit right in but that’s just not the case. Besides that, my few forays into fishing as a kid were not very successful. Most of the few I caught were no bigger than my child-sized hand and were promptly thrown back. They just didn’t make the cut. I think one time my Dad went above and beyond when he added my little fish to the catch so I could eat it at the fish fry.
Over the weekend, I went to a church music conference. One session I attended discussed the philosophy or theory of worship. To begin with, worship has several different meanings and connotations. We talk about our worship service, worship music, and worshipping God. Like facets of a diamond, they are all part of the big picture of worship.
My speaker reminded me of something I had heard before, that worship means ascribing or giving worth to something. Taking it deeper, the speaker added that the term was originally used in commerce. It had the concept of weight and weightiness. An item had worth if it had the required weight.
When we think about our worship of God it is a weighty matter. We are proclaiming that Almighty God is worthy and has the required weightiness to demand that worth. We are proclaiming that God has value and is worthy of our attention, our time, our talents, and our lives. We are proclaiming that He is the “real deal.” Like the Bible story of the man who sold everything he had so he could buy the field that held a precious treasure, we should give our all in worship to the One who gave His all for us.
Worship – it’s better than any fish fry ever could be!
Until our next togethering,
love ya,
