Vacations are wonderful things. There is a peculiar side to them though. You leave your home and stay somewhere else. Hotel rooms are made for sleeping. There are some “hybrids” with kitchenettes but still, sleeping is the focus with the bed taking up the majority of the room. If you stay with relatives, it automatically homey decorated with their things.
My brothers went together and rented a beach house. It had bedrooms, a living room, and a full kitchen – most everything that we have in our house. However, no matter how nice it was and no matter now much it was like our own house, it was not our home. We lived out of our suitcase slid under the bed. Our toothbrushes and other personal items were scattered over the vanity with no real regular place. Every mealtime we had to rummage through the various drawers and cabinets to find the pans or utensils we needed because we didn’t know what was available or where it was. Again, the bottom line – it was not our home.
The children of Israel wandered through the wilderness for forty years looking forward to their permanent home in the promised land. They would never be satisfied until they reached the wonderful place their parents and grandparents had told them about. We too are looking ahead to a better place. Jesus has promised us a home in heaven. This world may have some similarities to it, but it is only a shadow of the glories of heaven. Like the old gospel song says, “this world is not my home, I’m just-a travelling through” so don’t get too comfortable here. Jesus does give us life and life more abundant, but this world is nothing more than a rest stop on the way to our final destination. We can and should enjoy our time here, but heaven is so much better!
Thanks to Tom and Brian who helped out while I was gone. Capable hands mean no worries for me!
Until our next togethering,
