I must admit I come from great stock, even if I do say so myself. My family heritage is rich in “salt of the earth” type of folks. Various family members have done some research but they have not uncovered any royalty or celebrities – yet! No definite connections to novelist Sir Walter Scott nor Antartica explorer Robert Falcon Scott – yet! In this wealth of fabulous Scotts, there is a line of wonderful women.
As a young boy I would go with my Mother to visit Granny, my great grandmother. I knew very little about her except that she liked to dip. I discovered this by exploring a coffee can filled with shredded newspaper! Both my grandmothers were hard working women who definitely had the gift for cooking. Ma Scott would make wonderful yeast rolls for family dinners.
Ma Keating, besides her chocolate pies, was known for her “chocolate” – basically a sauce though some call it chocolate gravy. Not to slight my Dad but I think whatever genteelness I have came from my Mother. Over the past (almost) twenty-five years, I’ve learned a whole new culture from my northern Mother in Law. I grew up on cornbread dressing but stuffing definitely has its place! Not to mention all the wonderful growing and nurturing I’ve had through DaLee.
Now, we’re on the verge of Dory graduating high school and Bretney turning twenty and looking toward getting married. We wonder if we’ve done enough. What happened to all those lessons and skills and teachings we were going to get to? Where did the time go? As we begin to loosen our hold on them and let them go out of the nest, we can only do the best thing we can do – entrust them to God. We did the best we could to raise them in a Christian home and environment. The rest is up to God and their response to Him.
We’ll never leave them but more importantly, HE will never leave them. Just as we want them to trust Him, we too must trust Him. So, this Mother’s Day, this “women’s” day, I salute my daughters with pride and look forward to God’s future for them.
Until our next togethering,
love ya,
Bret
