Verse: Romans 8:28
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Devotional Thoughts:
I used to want to be a cowboy. I was in middle school and, inspired by an eclectic mix of John Wayne, Chuck Norris, and the Lone Ranger, I had decided that I wanted to become a cowboy. I got a lasso and started practicing with it every day. I even liked the cowboy look – before long I was decked out in my own pair of cowboy boots and sporting a new cowboy hat.
But imagine if, years down the road, in discussing the financial possibility of a college education, my parents told me that, because I had wanted to be a cowboy, they had bought a new ranch with the money they’d originally put back for college. I would be upset! Just because I wanted to be a cowboy when I was in middle school doesn’t mean I still wanted to be one when I was graduating high school.
Middle school me would’ve been thrilled at the idea of owning a ranch. High school graduate me would’ve been upset. And this fact, coupled with the verse above, leads to a vital truth:
We don’t know what’s best for us.
But God does. And that verse says that God is working ALL things together for good. Not some things. Not a couple things. All things. And he’s working them for our good – the verse says he’s working all things together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
We don’t always understand why we face the circumstances we face in life. But I think there will come a day where we look back on our life and thank God, because while we didn’t understand at the moment, when we look back it’s clear what God was up to the entire time.
Points to Ponder:
We don’t know what’s best for us, but God does. – Where in your life have you seen the reality of this truth?
Read Proverbs 3:5-6
– What does this verse have to say about our own understanding?
– Where in your life can you trust God even now?
Blessings,
Zac
