It may just be a “guy thing” but the Weather Channel is my go-to most every time I turn on the TV.  I have to see what’s going on with the weather.  I have to see what it’s like outside now and what’s in store for today and tomorrow, even the whole week.  Mainly, I need to know so I’ll know what kind of clothes to wear and if I’ll need a coat or an umbrella.

I’ll watch for the local forecast and before you know it, I’ve sat through four rounds of “Local on the Eights.”  DaLee thinks I’m crazy.   What could happen in ten minutes to keep me so enthralled?  How could the weather change so dramatically in ten minutes?  The thing is, I blink or get distracted, so I have to wait ten minutes for the next go round.  Next time, sure enough, I’m only half way paying attention so then I have to wait another ten minutes.

The same thing can happen in our spiritual life.  We live our lives, going merrily on our way.  We blink or get distracted and something changes before we know it.  We watch our culture and every ten minutes things have changed and shifted – usually away from God.  What used to be discussed in hushed whispers, if ever at all, is now shouted from the rooftops.  Like Hollie’s Dad used to say, what used to slither down back alleys now struts down Main Street.  But it didn’t happen overnight.  No, culture shifted one step at a time, one “ten minutes” at a time.

Even worse, we blink, get distracted, aren’t paying attention and ten minutes later, we are shifted away from God.  It doesn’t happen all at once but step by step, inch by inch, we get further and further away from God.

So maybe a “check in” every ten minutes isn’t such a bad thing.  How’s it going?  What am I doing?  Why am I doing…?  We’ve got to stay aware if we’re to stay on track.  That way, we can have a beautiful day!

Until our next togethering,

love ya,

Bret
