Dory Scott
The other day I had the chance to talk with Dory about a variety of subjects, ranging from Kit Kat Candy Bars to Gone with the Wind. This is a transcript of the interview, and I hope it provides some insight into the kind of person Dory is, along with her plans for after she graduates on May 18.
Zac: Okay Dory, we’re going to start with a few rapid-fire, easy questions. Sound good?
Dory: Sounds good!
Zac: Favorite class subject?
Dory: English
Zac: Favorite candy?
Dory: Kitkats
Zac: Kitkats really?
Dory: Kitkats or York’s
Zac: Favorite vacation destination?
Dory: Cedar Point, amusement park in Ohio, staying with my grandmother. It’s so much fun!
Zac: Favorite movie quote?
Dory: Uh…I have so many favorite movies!
Zac: I know; that’s tough. But you can only select one.
Dory: Hmmm. Probably “Have fun storming the castle!”
Zac: What’s that from?
Dory: The Princess Bride
Zac: Oh okay, yeah that’s a good one.
Dory: Have you not seen it?
Zac: The Princess Bride? Yeah I’ve seen it! “You killed my father. Prepare to die!”
Dory: Yes!
Zac: Favorite Disney movie? There’s only one right answer here.
Dory: I’m gonna say Inside Out. It’s really good.
Zac: Sounds good. Maybe not as good as The Lion King, but it sounds good in its own right.
Dory: Fair enough. To each their own!
Zac: Give us a fun fact about yourself.
Dory: I’ve given my hair to Locks of Love four times, and I’m about to donate again.
Zac: Wow, that’s a lot of hair. How many feet of hair is that?
Dory: I don’t know – my record is 14 1/2 inches. But I think I’m going to end up donating more than that this time because I’m cutting my hair a little shorter.
Zac: What is your best youth group memory?
Dory: That’s really hard. I think my favorite would be one of the years Shane was here. I came in around Christmastime and he had a Christmas tree hanging from the ceiling all decorated with ornaments, lights, tinsel, and everything. And underneath the Christmas tree was a manger. He said this is what a Christmas tree is supposed to be. It’s supposed to be pointing towards Christ. That’s definitely one of my favorite memories.
Zac: That’s neat. What would you say is the most impactful thing God has taught you through youth group?
Dory: Remembering that it’s good to listen to preachers and youth ministers, but, like our previous youth minister Daniel would say after every lesson, “Don’t take my word for it. Go and read the Bible to see how you feel about it. It’s not just what the preacher says, but also what you know to be true.”
Zac: That’s good. Now, you graduate on a Friday. What are your plans for Saturday? Are you planning on kicking back, having a Hulu and Netflix kind of day, or do you plan on having a big celebration?
Dory: Well, on Saturday, I have a dance recital in Huntington. My teacher recently reopened a studio over there, so two of my classes are planning to go be a part of their recital.
Zac: What’s your next steps after graduation?
Dory: I am attending Bethel University in McKenzie, TN. I want to study English with a Minor in Education and also with a lot of history, foreign language, and theater classes thrown in. I have a lot that I’m interested in. Hopefully, I want to study abroad and maybe go on a one-two week mission trip that many colleges have. I’m hoping to possibly participate in the Disney College Program, and go work at Walt Disney World for a semester.
Zac: That’s really cool. Is that something you would do over the course of the summer, or would it be for a whole semester?
Dory: It would be for the whole semester. But you go to Walt Disney World and get a job at the resort. You’re there for the whole semester, and there are seminars and classes to go to. So you get job experience, interning experience, and college credit, all rolled into one.
Zac: Do you plan on being part of the theater program at Bethel?
Dory: Yes. I’ve already auditioned to be a part of the musical theater program and I have been accepted. I’m going to be participating in that as much as I possibly can.
Zac: That’s cool. Those always seemed like a lot of fun. What do you think the Lord may be calling you to?
Dory: I think something that’s been on my heart for a long time is being a teacher, particularly English. I can remember in like 2nd or 3rd grade, I was sitting in the guidance counselor’s office and they had us draw a picture of what we wanted to be when we grew up. Back then it was a 3rd grade teacher, but now I think I want to be a high school English teacher, because I love discussing literature, reading, and even grammar to a certain extent. I feel like that’s something the Lord’s leading me to, because especially reviewing literature – it leads to deeper thinking. And something I’ve always loved about reading, to really experience a book, you have to put yourself in the shoes of the main character. It’s one of the greatest practices in empathy that exists.
Zac: What’s your favorite book?
Dory: That is incredibly difficult. I don’t even have a favorite series! There are so many I enjoy. Recently one that I read that had a huge impact on me was Gone with the Wind. I’ve never seen the movie, I’ve only read the 1,036 page book in about two weeks.
Zac: That’s crazy. Wow.
Dory: Yeah, it was really interesting. It was really impactful, especially seeing characters like Melanie and Ellen, because they are the kind of women I aspire to be – godly, kind, and helpful no matter what.
Zac: Last question, what’s your favorite Bible verse?
Dory: My favorite Bible verse, it’s actually pretty funny. One day, I remember waking up and just had Psalms 131 echoing in my head. So I looked it up:
Psalm 131
O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.
