Daylight Savings Time is an interesting thing, isn’t it?  The earth keeps spinning and the sun keeps right on rising and setting but we alter our perception of time.  And it really messes up some of us.  However, we have something to blame – the time change!

I was really tired today.  Well, I lost an hour.  I yawned through the entire afternoon.  Well I lost an hour.  I could barely hold my eyes open to watch TV.  Well, I did lose an hour.  I ran late.  I forget to go by the store.  I missed the latest episode of “The Bachelor.”  Well…I lost an hour.  As I thought about it, I wondered just how far I could push this thing.  I didn’t get the oil changed.  Well, I lost an hour.  I didn’t get the house painted.  Well, I lost an hour.  I didn’t fix global warming or world hunger.  Well…I did lose an hour!

We love to make excuses, don’t we?  But what is an excuse?  An excuse is a made up reason to hide the real reason.  It’s an attempt to shift the focus to something (or someone!) else to ease the blow to us.  They make us look less inept and out of it.  They might even get us out of a jam sometime.  However, most excuses are weak and don’t really hold up under scrutiny.

There’s an old Gospel song called “Excuses” which comically lists “reasons” why folks don’t come to church – the room is too hot, too cold, too bright, too dark, too loud or too soft.    One of my favorites is that Junior caught a cold and the whole family had to stay home to blow his nose!  The truth is in the chorus: “the devil will provide (excuses) if from church you’ll stay away.”

There are excuses all around us but when we think about how much God loves us, demonstrating it through His Son Jesus, they “fall short” is an understatement!  We have no excuse not to love Him, to serve Him, to trust and obey Him, or to gather with His/our church family.  Have a good nap to regain your hour and I’ll see you at the next togethering!

Love ya,

Bret
