A little research showed me that Labor Day was begun by and through labor unions and trade organizations. Who knew? However it began, Labor Day celebrates the working man by giving him a day off! I hope you had a holiday and if not, I hope you enjoyed the day any way. I know I did. My folks grilled hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings. Wonderful!
Sometimes work gets a bad rap. We don’t like it or feel forced to do it. We moan and groan about having to get up to go and the weekend is too short. One of my coworkers has been (lovingly) nicknamed Eeyore by a new teacher. While everyone is getting excited about Friday, he says the weekend just puts him closer to Monday when he has to come back to school! Sounds like he earned that nickname!
Work is a God-given task and opportunity. God appointed Adam and Eve as caretakers and stewards of the Garden of Eden. They were to look after it and tend to it. Work is also an opportunity to embrace and celebrate your health, talents, and abilities. Think of the folks who are physically unable to go to work next time you complain about having to go. I doubt you would want to change places with them.
Lastly, our work – and our attitudes toward and about it – is a way to witness for God. The way we act, the way we respond to difficulties and problems, the way we respect our supervisor or boss, all of these will reflect what makes us tick and who is in control of our hearts. That’s why we are reminded and challenged to do our work as if God Himself were our boss. (Modern Bret Version) The right attitude can make a wonderful platform to speak out for God.
So, until our next togethering, enjoy your work (as much as possible) and show yourself and others that a positive (Godly) attitude can make a world of difference.
love ya, Bret.
